Learning Outcomes and Application This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to maintain the safety of people and aircraft in compliance with relevant regulatory requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and national operating standards.It includes carrying out required safety procedures, managing safety risks and hazards, following flight crew directions, aiding and assisting passengers during an emergency, and carrying out administrative procedures.This unit addresses aviation non-technical skill requirements (mental, social and personal-management abilities) related to safety management duties of flight operations personnel and contributes to safe and effective performance in complex aviation operational environments.Operations are conducted as part of recreational, commercial and military aircraft activities across a variety of operational contexts within the Australian aviation industry.Work is performed independently or under limited supervision within a single-pilot or multi-crew environment.Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements are applicable to this unit.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Carry out safety procedures
  • Pre-take-off safety and security checks are conducted in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures
       
Element: Safety demonstrations and checks are conducted in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures
       
Element: Safety hazards are identified and reported and/or acted on in accordance with risk management procedures and regulatory requirements
       
Element: Appropriate hazard mitigation strategies are determined and implemented in conjunction with other aircrew members in accordance with risk management procedures and regulatory requirements
       
Element: Follow flight crew directions
  • Instructions of senior flight crew are followed at all times
       
Element: Individual crew positions are taken during landing and take-off and as directed by flight crew
       
Element: Safety restraints and crew seating are used during landing, take-off and as directed by flight crew instructions, workplace procedures and safety regulations
       
Element: Aid and assist passengers during an inflight emergency
  • Passengers are advised of hazardous conditions, potential emergencies, at appropriate times, and related safety and emergency actions to take during flight
       
Element: In an emergency, passengers are advised of the nature of the emergency and the procedures and precautions to be followed
       
Element: Clear communication is established and maintained with passengers
       
Element: Passengers are aided during the emergency in accordance with regulatory requirements, flight crew instructions and workplace procedures
       
Element: Passengers are assisted, as required, during emergency situations
       
Element: First aid and/or medical attention is applied, as required, in conjunction with other crew members during an emergency situation
       
Element: Carry out administrative procedures
  • Workplace administrative procedures related to flight safety are identified and interpreted
       
Element: Administrative procedures related to safety and emergency procedures and incidents are implemented in accordance with workplace and regulatory requirements
       
Element: All required aircraft safety documentation is completed and processed in accordance with workplace requirements

Assessment Tasks
